Reds rule Newport Beach Little League

Michael Borchard struck out five and walked one to lead the Reds to a

3-0 victory over the Angels in the Newport Beach Little League Majors

championship game May 27.

Borchard went six innings and received strong defensive support

from catcher Joey Booth, second baseman Mattias Russo Larsson and

Will Morrow.

The Reds (19-3) did all their scoring in the first.

Sean Tokuyama and Booth each singled while Borchard walked to load

the bases with no outs.

Will Morrow’s single made it, 2-0, and a walk to Chris Alvarez

capped the scoring.

The Reds needed to stave off a bases-loaded, no-out Angel rally in

the fourth to preserve the win.

Blake Thomsen and J.D. Dawn each singled while Nick Flamson walked

to begin the inning, setting the stage for the heart of the order.

But Borchard, who went undefeated on the mound this season, struck

out two and induced a force out at the plate.

Angels pitcher Jaime Heinecke settled down after a rocky first and

received support from his defense.

The Reds had runners at second and third with no outs in the

fourth after Morrow doubled off the wall and Brennan Anderson

singled.

But Heinecke retired the next three batters to escape the jam.

Angel catcher Gianni Ferrante saved two runs with force outs at

the plate.

The Angels were led offensively by Thomsen, Dawn, Armani Ferrante,

Ryan Grable and Michael Moorehead.
