Newport Harbor High freshman Allison Stokke continued her impressive

season, while sophomores Anne St. Geme of Corona del Mar and Jasmin

Day of Costa Mesa were stellar in the preliminaries of the CIF State

track and field championships Friday at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.

Newport Harbor High senior Elizabeth Clayton and CdM freshman

Hilary May also competed in the state meet.

Stokke will be the top seed in today’s pole vault final. She

cleared 12 feet, with no misses, to lead the group of nine who

advanced. Stokke, the national high school freshman-record holder

(12-7), went over 11-8, which would have qualified her, but for

confidence she went for 12 and got it on her first attempt. Three

others cleared the 12-0 mark with more than one miss.

St. Geme advanced in the 1,600, winning her heat and clocking the

top time of two heats with a 4:56.87.

“I felt really good,” St. Geme said by telephone. “I liked having

the whole day to relax. I feel confident about [the finals].”

Lauren Mulkey of Woodcreek finished in 4:57.44 to win her heat and

will be one of today’s favorites, whom also include College Park’s

Lindsay Allen (4:57.82) and Saratoga’s Alicia Follmar (4:59.84).

Day was one of eight who cleared 5-7 to advance in the high jump.

Day will be seeded seventh because of misses. She is looking to be

the second Day to win a state title, as her older sister, Sharon, won

the championship last year. Jasmin Day won the title in the high jump

for CIF Southern Section Division III and the Masters Meet.

May, who entered as the fastest freshman in the state meet,

finished in 5:07.73 to put her 18th overall.

“She had a fantastic year,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner said.

Clayton also closed out a successful season. She went 36-3 in the

triple jump and was not among the top nine who qualified for today’s

finals. Clayton, bound for Brigham Young University, holds the

Newport Harbor record in the triple jump (38-4 1/2).
