“I’ve really enjoyed being part of helping to direct Costa Mesa, and

I look forward to continuing that.”

-- Mike Scheafer, Costa Mesa City Councilman, on announcing plans

to run for reelection this year.

“It feels terrible. I spend every day on the phone talking to

people about issues in Costa Mesa, and I’m still doing that. I wish I

could run. I really do. And if there’s any way I could, believe me, I

would.”

-- Mike Berry, Costa Mesa activist, announcing that he would not

run for the City Council after learning he would have to divulge

parts of his income that he needs to keep confidential.

“I think the pageant is not only good for the city, but it gives

the kids something to shoot for -- they get a scholarship. It gives

these young ladies a chance to show how talented they are, how well

they can speak in public. I think it’s a positive thing.”

-- Dave Snowden, former Costa Mesa police chief, on the Miss Costa

Mesa Pageant that took place Saturday at the Costa Mesa Fish Fry. The

annual community event continues today.

“They don’t follow all the political races from president all the

way down to school board. They’re just focused on the general

election. That’s the kind of people we were trying to attract, and I

think we succeeded.”

-- Lee Lowrey, president of the Orange County Young Republicans,

on political fundraisers and meetings. The club hosted a party for

the president April 29 at the Harp Inn in Costa Mesa.

“He stood behind his men. I know when we started bickering between

ourselves, he would sit us down at the table and say, ‘We’re a family

and we better get along.’”

-- John Jeffers, who worked at Orange Coast College with Fran

Albers for about 20 years. Albers, who died last week at 84, was in

charge of the construction of OCC.
