Quite possibly the goal of the entire Daily Pilot Cup occurred during

Our Lady Queen of Angels’ 3-0 girls fifth- and sixth-grade gold

quarterfinal victory over St. John Saturday at the Costa Mesa Sports

Farm Complex.

Marta Tena booted the ball from about 40 yards out. The ball

sailed over everyone’s head and into the upper-right corner of the

net to give Our Lady the victory and advance the team to today’s

semifinal against Carden Hall at 9 a.m.

“Marta was probably aiming to serve the ball into the box as a

pass, because she is such an unselfish type of player,” Coach John

Carvelli said.

Natalie Rempalski gave Our Lady a quick lead to open up the game

and Tena widened the cushion to 2-0 moments later on a crossing shot.

St. John pushed the ball several times but Our Lady’s defense was

too strong and would not allow any sustained attack. Jillian Taylor,

usually a forward, was a force with the ball on defense as the

sweeper, a foreign position for her. Taylor was asked to switch to

that position because Our Lady’s usual sweeper, Marianne Jones, sat

out the second half with a pulled thigh muscle. Carvelli expects her

to be fine for today’s semifinal contest, which is good for Our Lady

considering her impact on defense.

“Marianne has saved more games for us than I can remember,”

Carvelli said. “She’s excellent back there for us.”

Also excellent for Carvelli are his goaltenders. Bridget Fox and

Victoria Kent combined to give Our Lady its third shutout of the

tournament.

“We played very well today and all our kids contributed in the

win,” Carvelli said. “I want us to continue to move the ball well and

control the ball because those were our keys to victory today.”

In other girls 5-6 quarterfinals action:

* Andersen 4, Harbor Day 1:

Kate Alvardo, Kelly Feely, MacKenzie Brown and Sarah Craig each

scored a goal to give Andersen the 4-1 victory over Harbor Day

Saturday at the Costa Mesa Sports Farm Complex.

Melissa Hancock rushed up the middle and scored to the left side

in the second half for the Seahawks, but Lindsay Luke was remarkable

in goal for Andersen as were the fullbacks in front of her, including

Hannah Rome.
