Dolphins take bite out of Sharks

Three goals in the first 10 minutes gave the Mariners Christian

third- and fourth-grade boys soccer team a solid foundation for its

quarterfinal gold division duel against Rea.

The Dolphins would need that sturdy base to weather a wealth of

turbulence en route to a 4-2 triumph over the Rea Sharks Saturday at

the Farm Sports Complex.

Mariners Christian faces Harbor Day in one semifinal at 10:30 a.m.

today on Farm field No. 3.

Timmy Root scored twice while Daniel Toberty and Brent Lawson each

added single goals for Mariners Christian, which outscored its prior

two opponents, 13-0, in winning its pool.

“They took it to us. We were not ready to play today,” Rea Coach

Ryan Baker said.

Baker watched Costa Mesa paramedics cart off a Rea player -- his

left arm in a sling -- after he and an opponent collided in the first

half, one of several aggressive moves players on both teams exuded

throughout the game.

“I think he might have a broken collarbone,” Baker said. “He got

hit from behind.”

Mariners Christian Coach Phil Miller said there was nothing

malicious about the play and that it was within the rules.

“Both teams are experienced, so you get a more aggressive game,”

Miller said. “Soccer is a physical game. Both teams did well.”

Angel Robles scored both goals for Rea.

Mariners Christian goalkeeper Ian Baugh helped preserve the

victory.

“It’s a tough loss. I don’t want to take anything away from

[Mariners Christian],” Baker said. “They played great.”

In other quarterfinal games:

* Harbor Day 4, Newport Coast 2:

Jack Gorab scored two goals while Jack Percival and Jonathan Keedy

each scored one goal for Harbor Day, which took a 4-0 lead into

halftime.

Mason Case added three assists for the Seahawks, who got strong

goaltending from Ford Hanour. Sweeper Nick McGuinness covered much of

the field.

Connor Gaal scored both goals for Newport Coast with Cole Gennrich

adding an assist.

Newport Coast goalkeeper Rusty Padia made 20 saves.

* Lincoln 3, St. John 0:

The Leopards scored two goals in the final three minutes to cap a

25-shot output and earn a berth against Adams in a 10:30 a.m.

semifinal on Farm field No. 4.

Carter Keddington, J.D. Dawn -- penalty kick -- and Kevin

Gordinier each scored goals for Lincoln, which defeated Rea in a

shootout, 4-3, Saturday morning.

Steven Hildebrant made 15 saves for St. John while Andrew Doka

stopped four shots -- three in the second half -- for Lincoln.

* Adams 5, Harbor View 1:

Guillermo Madrigal and Ezekiel Villegas each scored twice and

Carlos Barrios Jr. added one goal for Adams.

Matt McCoy scored for Harbor View.

Alex Transcoso, Rene Oando and Jacob Knapp all patrolled the

Adams’ goal while Erik Fisher and Chris Picarelli anchored the Harbor

View net.

“[Fisher and Picarelli] probably made 10 to 15 saves. They were

diving all over the place,” Adams Coach Bob Knapp said.

“Our passing did it for us. We were unselfish.”
