Bomb scare on bus turns up nothing
A pipe bomb scare on an Orange County Transportation Authority bus
Wednesday afternoon turned out to be some kind of a mechanical part,
Newport Beach police officials said.
A cylindrical metal object was found on the floor of the bus,
leading the bus driver, who was traveling with a handful of
passengers on San Miguel Drive north of Pacific View Circle at about
12:30 p.m., to call the transportation authority dispatch, who in
turn alerted Newport Beach Police about the device, which was spotted
in the bus, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman.
The object was black, metallic and cylindrical about three inches
long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter, he said.
An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Orange County
Transportation Authority came to Newport Beach, examined the device
and determined that it wasn’t a pipe bomb or any other dangerous
device, Shulman said. The passengers were briefly evacuated, he said.
