Cardinals open strong in District 55 Tournament of Champions

Michael Bloom struck out nine in tossing a three-hitter to lead the

Newport Beach Little League Majors Cardinals to a 2-0 win over the

Northwood Dodgers to open the District 55 Tournament of Champions

Saturday.

Bloom singled twice and scored the Cardinals’ first run in the

fourth. Cory Vitalo’s single moved Bloom to third and he scored when

the pitcher turned his back.

Andrew Dunlap singled, was sacrificed by Clark Cashion, then

scored on Bloom’s RBI hit.

Cashion also tagged out a runner trying to score, receiving a

relay throw from shortstop Josh Starnes after the Dodgers’ Charlie

Cortez singled.

Second baseman Zac Cabin was named defensive player of the game

and got help from teammates Billy McDonald, Steven McAfee, Riley

Conroy, Alex Morrison, Josh Starnes and Nick Treadway.

In CMALL Minor A play:

* Yankees 13, Angels 8: Mikey Samuelson hit his fourth home run of

the year and the Yankees made an early 4-1 lead stand up May 27.

Samuelson tripled in a four-run Yankee first that included

back-to-back singles by Logan Benter and Jordan Myers and an Abraham

Garcia double.

Brooks Watkins scored another run.

The Angels came back with three runs in the third and four in the

fourth, but the Yankees responded each time.

Jake Comer singled, stole second and scored while Ryan Weber and

Matt Logue each added runs for the Yankees in the third.

Catcher Nolan Manson, along with Dirk Hill and Evan Castroverde,

played strong defense for the Yankees.
