Bryan wins Cabo Classic
The annual Cabo Classic skimboarding extravaganza drew its largest
field of competitors yet, but that didn’t stop local skimboarder Bill
Bryan from taking the overall title.
The Victoria Skimboards star turned away pros from all over the
nation to capture first-place.
Bryan led a strong contingent of Victoria Skimboard competitors
that included Bandon Sears (third), Mile Grobman (fifth), Jaime Kaya
Lovett (sixth) and Keith Perry (ninth), all among the Top 10, and
Hunter Poller finished in 13th-place.
The prize purse was $5,000.
Bryan opened the event with crushing force, which let his
competition know he was the one to beat. His switch stance airs and
barrel rides earned him high totals, and combination after
combination, seemed effortless as the liners rolled through the surf.
A ride with a 180 shuv-it to 360 off the lip to barrel ride was
almost characteristic of the event, but even with the allure of
liners and combinations, it was his aerial maneuvers that captured
everyone’s attention.
Grady Archbold threw a 540 big spin but could not keep up with the
biggest “boost” of the contest by Sears.
On what appeared to be a regular wrap, Sears competing with a
pulled hamstring, catapulted himself nearly 11-feet out of the water,
throwing a version of the “Superman” grab to lock down third-place.
