Padres handle Reds, 17-12
The Padres battled back from a 9-6 deficit to overtake the Reds,
17-12, in the Costa Mesa National Little League Farm Division
championship game June 5.
The Padres scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to
take a 13-10 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Reds took a 3-0 lead in the first, but the Padres scored five
times in their half of the inning.
Garrett Deutsch (3 for 4, three runs) led off the inning with a
triple and scored first run on a single by Bill Crosson (3 for 4,
three RBIs).
Four consecutive singles by Dante Capoccia (4 for 4, two doubles),
Mitchell Clevidence (1 for 4, one run), Kohler Ponsford (4 for 4,
three RBIs) and Ted Zoerner (3 for 3, three RBIs) brought home four
more runs.
Harrison Stern led the defense at catcher.
The Reds battled back in the third, scoring six runs to take a 9-6
lead.
The Padres then tied the score at 9 with RBIs by John Santoyo (two
RBIs) and William Reed (3 for 3, two doubles).
After one run by the Reds, the Padres scored four runs in the
bottom of the fourth to take a 13-10 lead.
The Reds battled back, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth,
to diminish the deficit to a single digit.
The Padres then rallied for four more runs, led by hits from Ryan
Bonker (2 for 3, two runs), Reed, Deutsch, Crosson and Christian
Darrow (2 for 4, two RBIs), giving them momentum into the sixth
inning. After a strikeout and a single, Deutsch caught a pop-up and
threw to Capoccia for a game-ending double play.
In Majors playoffs:
* Padres 5, Phillies 0: Eusebio Castillo struck out 12 in a
two-hit shutout to lead the Padres over the Phillies, 5-0, in the
Costa Mesa National Little League Majors Division tournament opener
May 26.
Backing him up by making plays in the infield were Kevin Thomas,
Ryan Cherney and Gian-Paul Stebbins.
The Padres combined for 12 hits, getting contributions from
Stebbins, Castillo, Ryan Burns, Ryan Barnett, Thomas, Colin Kincaid,
Cherney and Jesus Rodriguez.
Stebbins went 3 for 3 with two singles and a double.
In Minor B play:
* Dodgers 25, Braves 7: The Dodgers’ offense piled up a
season-high 19 hits in the victory May 26.
Christian Vazquez, Jeff Carlyle and Eric Pfautz each had three
hits while Robert Marrone, Kaimon Brust and Eddie Chervony each had
two.
Starter Nathan Pearson gave up five runs and four hits and Pfautz
pitched the last two innings in relief, getting some strong defense
behind him.
Right fielder Shane Sutton threw out a runner trying to stretch a
single into a double.
* Padres 6, Braves 4: The Padres won in extra innings.
Brandon Dieckhoff pitched five solid innings and Matt Thomas came
in to pitch the sixth and seventh for the Braves.
Lisa Hyndman and Josh Tierney both made catches in the outfield
while Gabe Ruan and Charles Nelson each made strong plays in the
infield.
Dieckhoff, Tierney, Ryan West and Colin Moran all tallied hits for
the Braves.
In Farm play:
* Padres 16, Reds 4: The Padres scored eight runs in the sixth to
pull away for the victory May 26 and advance to the championship.
Tyler Owens and Garrett Deutsch shared Player of the Game honors,
each finishing with three hits, three runs scored and six RBIs. They
each had key RBI doubles in the sixth.
Kohler Ponsford started the sixth with one of his three doubles.
Mitchell Clevidence doubled to knock in Ponsford to start the
scoring.
Three consecutive singles by William Reed, Ryan Bonker and John
Santoyo continued the inning. Ted Zoerner then doubled to left field
for an RBI. Dante Capoccia knocked in the final runner with a two-out
single to right field.
Christian Darrow (2 for 4, one run) and Bill Crosson (2 for 4, one
RBI) provided key hits to start the scoring in the first and fourth
innings.
Harrison Stern showed his defensive strength at catcher.
Capoccia played strong at first, recording six putouts, including
plays from Deutsch and Owens.
Reed caught a line drive to prevent a run-scoring double in the
fifth.
