UC Irvine freshman closer Blair Erickson, who led the nation with 17

regular-season saves, is among three pitchers to share Collegiate

Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshman of the Year honor.

Wade LeBlanc (Alabama) and Tim Lincecum (Washington) join Erickson

to headline the 2004 Freshmen All-American team.

Erickson was also Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year

this spring, helping the Anteaters (34-23-1) make the program’s first

trip to the NCAA Division I regionals, where they were eliminated

June 5 at South Bend, Ind.

The right-hander posted a 4.10 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 37 1/3

innings. He issued 21 walks. Erickson set a Big West freshman saves

record, a UCI single-season record and is now second all-time on the

conference save list.

Erickson will travel to Durham, N.C., June 20-26 to compete in the

2004 USA Baseball national team trials.

The Anteaters have had a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American

three consecutive years with Mark Wagner (2003), Matt Anderson (2002)

and Glenn Swanson (2002) the past honorees.

Scheafer earns scholarship

* HONORS: Estancia High senior Eric Scheafer, a second baseman for

the Eagles baseball team, was awarded the Paul Troxel Memorial

Scholarship at the school’s annual senior banquet Wednesday night.

The scholarship is given to a student-athlete whose effort in

academics and sports is in the mold of Troxel, a former longtime

Estancia baseball coach. The scholarship was established in the

2000-01 school year to honor Troxel, who died of a heart attack and

brain aneurysm in May of 1999.

Art Perry, Estancia’s activities director, said Scheafer met the

criteria for the scholarship.

“Eric is hard-working and a determined student,” said Perry, who

was involved in the selection process. “Eric knew Paul well. Eric’s

family grew up with Paul and they knew each other. It was a perfect

fit.”
