Tournament of Champions continues today

The District 62 Tournament of Champions, featuring 18 teams from

eight Little Leagues within district boundaries, continues today with

play at Robinwood and Seaview little leagues.

Each of the eight leagues is represented by a champion and

second-place team in the Majors, Minor A and Minor B divisions.

Robinwood is hosting the Area 1 competition as well as the overall

Majors, Minor A and Minor B division championship finals on

Wednesday.

Making up the Area 1 field is Ocean View, Costa Mesa National No.

2, Westminster, Costa Mesa National No. 2, Fountain Valley,

Huntington Valley No. 2, Robinwood and Seaview No. 2.

Seaview is hosting the Area 2 competition through Monday.

Making up the Area 2 field is Seaview, Westminster No. 2,

Huntington Valley, Fountain Valley No. 2, Costa Mesa National, Ocean

View No. 2, Costa Mesa American and Robinwood No. 2.

Preparations for the tournament began at Seaview Little League

last Saturday.

Nearly 40 volunteers helped with field preparation, rebuilding of

pitcher’s mounds, putting up nets, and working on the public address

system, said Kent Hayden, director of field maintenance at Seaview

Little League.

“There are a lot of people in these surrounding neighborhoods who

take pride in these playing fields,” Hayden said. “We have people who

have kids playing in the league, and those who don’t, give of their

time to help make these fields look the way they do.”

Hayden said that more than $250,000 has been spent on improvements

in the past four years at the league’s complex at LeBard Park.

Improvements included the building of a new coach-pitch field, the

rebuilding of the parking lot and new infields.

Work will continue in the fall, he said, with the renovation of

the outfields and a new scoreboard.

The Junior Division tournament, featuring two teams each from

Robinwood, Huntington Valley, Fountain Valley and Westminster,

continues today at Westminster Little League.

Robinwood and Seaview also will host the competition at the

District 62 All-Star Tournament beginning June 30.
