Welch is MVP of the PCL

Corona del Mar High junior outside hitter Kevin Welch has been named

the Pacific Coast League boys volleyball Most Valuable Player after

leading the Sea Kings to the CIF Southern Section Division II

semifinals and a perfect 10-0 record in the PCL.

Also selected first-team all-league by PCL coaches are junior

outside hitter Tom Welch and senior setter Dominic Rubino.

Junior middle blocker Austin Brawner is a second-team pick.

The rest of the first team is Luke Morris and Trey Chapel of

Laguna Beach, Northwood’s Brett Vanlandingham, A.J. Moskus from

University and Tesoro’s Tim Steadman.

Joyce Academy MVP

* VOLLEYBALL: Recent Sage Hill School graduate Kevin Joyce, who

led the Lightning boys volleyball team to a share of the Academy

League title and a berth in the CIF Southern Section Division V

semifinals, has been named league MVP by the circuit’s coaches.

Joyce, a first-team all-leaguer as a junior, tops five Sage Hill

players to gain All-Academy League recognition.

Joining Joyce on the first team are Max Frederick and Julian

Smith-Newman, both of whom were second-team selections last year.

Jake Lazere and Alex Greer are second-team honorees, while Marcel

Sohl and Zach Singerman received honorable mention.

Parilla an Olympian

* TRAMPOLINE: Newport Beach resident Jennifer Parilla won the

trampoline event at the U.S. Olympic team trials Saturday night at

the San Jose State University events center.

A five-time national champion, Parilla earned her second Olympic

berth with a three-jump total of 101.70 points, more than five points

better than the runner-up.

Parilla became the first women’s trampoline Olympian for the

United States by competing in the 2000 Olympic Games, where she

finished ninth.

Parilla qualified the U.S. for a position in the 2004 Olympics by

placing 16th at the 2003 world championships Oct. 27 in Hannover,

Germany.

She was ninth in the Athens Olympic test event with a two-jump

total of 62.50. Women’s trampoline in the 2004 Olympics will be

contested Aug. 21.

Quades finish fourth

* TENNIS: Newport Beach resident Eric Quade and his father,

Stanley Quade, were defeated, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, by Ron Tonidandel and

Dave Dandel in the super seniors (fathers 70-and-older) third-place

match of the United States Tennis Association father-son doubles

tennis tournament Sunday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Top-seeded Larry and John Huebner, who defeated the Quades in

Saturday’s semifinal, won their fourth straight super seniors

division crown with a 6-2, 6-1 final victory Sunday.
