The third annual Laguna Beach Junior Chess Tournament will be held

from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

The event is for children in kindergarten through eighth grade and

will be in the El Morro Elementary School multi-purpose room. The fee

for the tournament is $15 and will include pizza and soda. For

Friends of the Library to hold six-day book sale

The Friends of the Laguna Beach Library will hold a book sale from

Monday to July 3 at the bookstore under the library at 363 Glenneyre

St.

The sale will include a Wilkie Collins collection, a set of

Encyclopedia Britannica in excellent condition, cookbooks and a

series of taped lectures by well-known professors from top

universities, including Stanford.

Bookshop hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday,

with evening hours until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Village Laguna hosts potluck, donates funds

Village Laguna will host a potluck dinner and general meeting at 6

p.m. Monday at the third floor Community Room at Wells Fargo Bank.

The group will award donations and hear presentations from

community groups that it supports financially.

Village Laguna donates annually to a wide variety of

organizations. This year a total of $3,600 will go to the

Crosscultural Council for the La Playa Center and Laguna Day Workers

Center, Friends of the Library, Laguna Beach Boys and Girls Club,

Laguna Beach Community Clinic, Laguna Beach Historical Society,

Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Shanti and Laguna Resource Center.

An additional $1,000 will be awarded to this year’s Village Laguna

scholarship recipient, Jacquelin Reed. Smaller amounts have already

been donated to the American Cancer Society, Schoolpower, Top of the

World Jog-a-thon and the Laguna Beach Exchange Club for the Police

Awards Banquet.

Village Laguna welcomes members and nonmembers alike and invites

the public to join its potluck dinner starting at 6 p.m. Bring food

for six or more.

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park seeks volunteers

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park needs wilderness access volunteers to

help guests understand the history of the park and help them during

their visit.

The group will hold a volunteer orientation from 9 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the Nature Center at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park.

Parking is provided in the parking area just south of the junction

of El Toro Road and Laguna Canyon Road. Volunteer training is offered

every third weekend.

No experience is required. Seniors and the disabled are encouraged

American Legion plans Independence Day event

The public is invited to join the veterans and Auxiliary ladies of

the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in their

Independence Day celebration. This year, the group will honor the

“Greatest Generation,” the men and women who helped to win World War

II and will feature speakers who participated in the war.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. July 4 at Legion Hall, 384

Legion St. in Laguna Beach.

After the ceremony a picnic lunch will be served to everyone.

Prior to the ceremony, the Veterans Flag Team will be installing

U.S. Flags along Laguna’s streets at 8 a.m.
