Exchange Club honors top officers

The Police Officers of the Year were honored by the Exchange Club of
Newport Harbor at a recent luncheon organized by member Bill Bechtel.
Newport Beach Police Capt. Paul Henisey introduced Officer of the
Year Det. Rich Bradley, who is also the department’s training officer
in the use of force. Bill Hartford was introduced as Supervisor of
the Year for the Newport Beach Police Department. Hartford deals with
sex offenses. Costa Mesa Police Chief John Hensley introduced Julie
Beckman, Officer of the Year who is in charge of recruitment and
training for the department. Paul Beckman, husband of Julie Beckman,
was named Supervisor of the Year. Paul is a homicide investigator and
an expert in speech analysis. The Exchange Club presented each
officer with a plaque recognizing their award. Congratulations.
SOROPTIMISTS INSTALL NEW OFFICERS
Diane Ashe has been installed as president of the Soroptimist
International of Newport Harbor, replacing Katherine Flores, whose
served as president this year. Serving with Ashe are Carolyn Turner
and Rosalinda Lopez, vice presidents; Denise Glass, treasurer; Sally
Brocket, assistant treasurer; Casey Shea, secretary; and Soulah
Warshauer and Kathy Flores, directors. The Soroptimist Club, the
world’s largest women’s-service club, meets at noon on the second and
fourth Wednesdays of the month at the Santa Ana Country Club. For

LIONS OFFICERS INSTALLED
The Harbor Mesa Lions Club held its installation of new officers
for 2004-05 at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Sparkes on Saturday.
District Governor Elect Barbara Hayward officiated at the
installation of the following: Immediate Past President Joan Parks,
President Sandi Scheafer, 1st Vice President Carol Van Holt, 2nd Vice
President Arlene Schafer, Secretary Karen Lamas, Treasurer Marianne
Segalla, Bulletin Editor Jennifer Kelder, Tail Twister Maureen
Coffey, Lion Tamer Myrta Sparkes, and directors Ann McIlroy, Eunice
Thomason, Patty Mueller, Gina Stansbury, Janie Harris and Bernice
Ellis. The Harbor Mesa Lions Club meets twice a month for dinner.
Barbara Hayward, Harbor Mesa Lions member, will be officially
installed as District 4-L4 governor at the Lions International
Convention in Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, July 5 through 9. This
convention is attended by Lions Club members from more than 100
countries and is one of the largest annual gatherings of its kind in
the world.
Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club member Mike Scheafer, who is
a current Costa Mesa City Council member, served as Lions District
4-L4 governor in 1997-98. One has to give a lot of time, talent and
treasure to become a service club governor. Congratulations are in

HUMAN RELATIONS PICNIC
The Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee is sponsoring the third
annual community picnic from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Fairview Park,
2525 Placentia Ave. at the entrance next to Estancia High School.
“Each and every resident of Costa Mesa is invited, and we are
hoping to bring together the diversity of Costa Mesa,” said Sue
Smith, Human Relations Committee member. Bring your own picnic lunch
and blanket, and the Human Relations Committee will provide
