California’s first lady lends a hand in Newport

California First Lady Maria Shriver brought her call for service

to Newport Beach Wednesday as the guest speaker at a fundraiser for

the Orangewood Children’s Foundation. Shriver’s presence enabled the

nonprofit to raise more than $125,000 for a scholarship endowment.

Shriver urged patrons at the fundraiser to serve their state by

giving blood or helping Habitat for Humanity build a house.

* John Wayne Airport last week added space for eight new

checkpoints to help speed summer travelers through security.

Four new checkpoints were added at each end of the terminal. The

airport has seen record numbers of passengers since some travel caps

there were loosened last year.

* The Newport Beach City Council on Tuesday approved a 2004-05

budget that included $171 million in spending and anticipated $156

million in revenues. Officials said the budget was largely status

quo, providing a continuation of current city services, and most

increases over 2003-04 costs came from required salary and benefit

payments.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council continued until July 13 an

appeal hearing on whether Josh Slocum’s Dinner and Supper Club should

be allowed to add entertainment and dancing. The Planning Commission

denied the request and city staff members recommended the council do

the same.
