It’s pretty much a safe bet that any sort of geometric pattern is

going to make an eye-catching photo. Humans can’t help it. We’re

forced to notice or pay attention to patterns that at some point in

human evolution were for our survival. Only an anthropologist could

tell you exactly why, but designers, architects, landscapers, the

Scottish and photographers have capitalized on this human trait by

using patterns in their work to draw attention. What makes Kent

Treptow’s photo work journalistically is the inclusion of the perfect

human element for this scenario -- the gardener. The mess of

trimmings around one of the hedges to break-up the pattern is just

enough to tell a little story. A gardener trimming the hedges wasn’t

the big news of the day, but it shows how a humdrum task can hold our

attention.
