Newport Harbor alumni competing

The Newport Harbor High alumni basketball tournament, in its fourth

year, will take place July 24 at the gymnasiums on the Sailors

campus.

The teams will not be made up of graduating classes. Instead

players can form a team to their liking, tournament director Jamie

Holmes (Class of 1973) said. Players who are not on a team can show

up the day of the tournament and will be placed on a squad.

For registration on the day of the tournament, the cost will be

$30, which includes a T-shirt. Check-in time is at 8:30 a.m. and

games start at 9. Signing up before July 24 will cost $25. For

Players who graduated this past spring are also invited to

compete, Holmes said.

Last year, the team including Justin McIntee (class of 1992),

Chuck McGavern (‘85), Eric Dragaset (‘88), Michael Bassler (‘88),

Allen Fraser (‘85) and Tyler Coon (‘88) won the tournament. There

were eight teams (55 players) competing last year.

The proceeds and contributions from the tournament will go to the

Newport Harbor booster club and also toward the renovation of Ralph

Reed Gym, Holmes said.
