City should name park after Reagan
I would like to propose that the Orange County Board of
Supervisors name the linear park north of Pacific Coast Highway along
Seapoint Avenue in honor of Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the
United States and 33rd governor of California.
There is already a five-acre park named for Harriett M. Wieder in
Huntington Beach at Lynn Street. Naming a second park for the same
person is not done anywhere else in our city.
If you agree, please contact your county supervisor and let them
know you support “Ronald Reagan Regional Park.”

Review of ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ on the money My compliments to Jim Erwin for his review of the documentary film
“Fahrenheit 9/11.” I had just seen it the day before and found it to
be a powerful film, only sorry that I had not taken a notebook along
to help me remember some of the points that were made. The long and
accurate review was a great help. The two hours flew by as I laughed,
cried, snorted in derision and sometimes covered my eyes to avoid
seeing the horrors. I urge everyone to see this wonderfully crafted
documentary.

Downtown should be closed: quit stalling
Our City Council, our members of City Council, have voted against
closing Main Street. My wife and I went down there two weeks ago to
have dinner. Never again. The sidewalks are filthy, the people are
everywhere, you cannot have a meal without being surrounded by
smokers and noise and traffic: It’s a disaster. To let a few of the
Downtown businesses overrule the majority of people who want Downtown
closed is a complete disgrace.

I think it’s a mistake not to close Main Street to vehicle
traffic. It would be more beneficial for the merchants for walking
personnel who take their time rather than just driving through. I
think the merchants are making a big mistake.

I think the Downtown idea would be marvelous if they did it
correctly. Not to spend money with people analyzing and all that. Get
off the dust and do something right for Downtown for the people who
have been living here forever, and stop spending it on gigantic junk.

New voting machines are a waste of money
I think the electronic voting machines are a nightmare
(“Electronic voting will be back at the polls,” June 17). I think
they’re a tremendous waste of money, and I don’t get it.

I feel the voting machines are bad (“Electronic voting will be
back at the polls,” June 17). I am very unhappy to see them in
November. I think they’re an invitation to fraud, so very easy for
people to mess up on. They’re a very bad idea, an expense that never
should have been made by the appropriate authorities. They’re
compounding their error by bringing them back.

Glad students want to keep ‘Under God’
I’m very happy to see the students are supporting our pledge as is
(“Students support pledge as is,” June 17). I’m happy that our
justice system has come to the realization that our country was
founded on our belief in God and to be able to worship our Lord Jesus
Christ, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and I certainly am happy to see
that something is happening here. The judges giving out all this
crazy stuff lately should have their heads examined. They certainly
need to be taken off the governing positions in our government.

‘Under God’ should stay in the pledge
I think we should always keep “Under God” in our Pledge of
Allegiance (“Students support pledge as is,” June 17). I think that
the liberals are trying to take God out of our schools, our
government, our country, and God cannot bless a country here if he is
so disregarded. I think we should keep God in the Pledge of
Allegiance.

I support leaving the “Under God” phrase in the Pledge of
Allegiance (“Students support pledge as is,” June 17). Most Americans
believe in God and God’s been involved in American history. I think
it’s proper for it to be there.

Sale of mesa is great news for city
We read with delight the news that the Wildlife Conservation Board
and the developer Hearthside Homes have come to an agreement to
purchase 103 acres of the lower part of the Bolsa Chica Mesa for $65
million. This is a most significant step toward the vision of the
Bolsa Chica Land Trust of preserving all of the Bolsa Chica. We look
forward to continuing our work to save other privately held lands at
Bolsa Chica.

Antics not appropriate for Fourth of July
I did not see their antics as I was a participant in our 100th
Fourth of July Parade, but friends of mine from out of town asked me
what those people with ridiculous looking bird outfits were doing
carrying signs saying “We Won.”
I guessed it must have been some of the Amigos de Bolsa Chica
members celebrating the state purchase of the lower portion of the
Bolsa Chica oil fields. Someone voiced the opinion that they thought
the parade was a celebration of the birth of our great nation. I did
not go on to explain any further to confuse my friends. It did annoy
me that these people that made birds out of themselves during a
Fourth of July parade to make a self-centered political statement
could have used better judgment. After all, the land purchased is
state land and certainly should not become another burden for our
city to maintain. I ask the readers: What were those people really
celebrating?
