Vipers claim Smythe title
A strong defensive effort, complemented by a steady offense, was
enough to push the Vipers to the Smythe Division championship.
The defense posted a shutout, and the offense scored in every
period in a 5-0 victory over the Booyahs at Coast 2 Coast Inline
Hockey Center in Huntington Beach.
Matthew Williams’ three goals paved the way, with Nick Iacono and
Jeffrey Beko each scoring once. Lauren Kilroy topped all players with
a pair of assists and Beko added one.
Zachary Beko got the shutout in goal on 22 saves.
Chas Plimpton had 16 saves for the Booyahs.
In other championship games:
Norris Division
Wasabi 7, Skulls 6
Chas Scott’s late goal lifted Wasabi to the Norris title. It was
the fourth goal of the game for Scott, who also had an assist.
Derek Slayton, Trevor Scott and Trevor Millikan also scored and
Zach Hoskins had an assist. William Baltazar finished with 13 saves.
Alexander McCabe, Sean McDaniel and Alex Kowalski each scored
twice for the Skulls. McDaniel added two assists with Kowalski and
Daniel Salazar each tallying one assist.
Craig Wellander had 24 saves.
Howe Division
Riptide 6, Pythons 1
The Riptide allowed only a first-period goal by Brandon Drochner
in rolling to the title.
James Williams’ two goals led a Riptide attack that saw Zac Zomaya
and Troy Bundy each score once with an assist, Adam Scott and Rinald
Hancock each scored once and Gregory Hancock also got an assist.
Nicholas Jezulin had 13 saves in goal for the Riptide.
Jacob Otis recorded 16 saves for the Pythons.
Wales Division
Blind 3, Spiders 2
Kyle Schneider’s score off Brad Wilson’s feed in the third period
proved to be the difference for the Blind.
Schneider also assisted on a goal by Christopher Nagle goal, and
Brett Shaver netted a goal off Kevin Cant’s assist to complete the
Blind’s scoring. Corey DeMatteo had 22 saves to preserve the win.
Eric Freese scored two unassisted goals and Collin Monge finished
with 22 saves for the Spiders.
