Rotary changes the presidential guard
JIM DE BOOM
Rotary Club presidents for the centennial year of Rotary
International have been installed in separate ceremonies over the
past several weeks, according to District Governor Grant Engle of
Fountain Valley.
The new club presidents are Kim DeBroux, Newport-Balboa; Fay
Bosler, Newport Beach Sunrise; Greg Arbues, Newport Irvine; and Truck
Smith, South Coast Metro.
The Rotary’s first club meeting was held on Feb. 23, 1905 in
Chicago, Ill., where Rotarians will gather again in June 2005 for the
Centennial Convention, according to Bosler. Today, there are 1.2
million Rotarians in 32,000 clubs in 166 countries around the world,
she added.
Serving with Bosler at Newport Beach Sunrise are Chris Szechenyi,
president-elect; Rob Williams, secretary; Christina Holliday,
treasurer; and directors Fred Hernandez, Syd Lucas, Bob Wess, Paul
Brach, Willis Longyear, Nagy Lbrahim and Ray Oien.
Serving on the Newport-Balboa board are Terry Rousselot,
president-elect; Wendell Sawyer, treasurer; and directors Roger
Gilbert, Bob Thayer, Richard Holmgren, Dan Hoffman, Dick Dickson,
Steve Speer, Frank Anderson and Roger McGonegal.
At Newport Irvine, Tim Shields is president-elect; Tim Hatch,
secretary, Abe Watkin, treasurer; and directors Richard Hargenrather,
Karen Spilly-Shanihan, Robert Little, Jason Lee, Kent Falk, Brady
Price and Bailey Smith.
Sharing director duties with Truck Smith at South Coast Metro will
be Lisa Allen, Dale Bixler and Walter Lynch. Congratulations to all!
PROUDLY WE HAIL
The “Proudly We Hail” plaque was presented by the Orange Coast
Exchange Club to Stewart and Gini Anderson of Corona del Mar, a
family that flies the American flag daily.
The Andersons have flown the flag for 30 years at their home on
Keel. They have a smaller flagpole in their back yard.
Thurman (Dig) Graves, a member of the Newport Harbor Exchange
Club, and Bette Moses of the Orange Coast Exchange Club put the
American flags on the dolphins in the median at Marguerite and Coast
Highway for Fourth of July weekend, while Gil Lukowski of the Newport
Harbor Exchange Club provided two new flags, which proclaim “Support
Our Troops,” that were placed on the front topiary dolphins.
CONGRATS ARE IN ORDER
To Shirley Kohlmeier, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award at
the recent Exchange District Convention. To Wendell Sawyer, who was
named Rotarian of the Year by the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa. To
Deane Bottorf, who received the Exchangite of the Year Award from the
Exchange Club of Newport Harbor. To Ed Kohlmeier, who received the
Exchangite of the Year Award from the Exchange Club of the Orange
Coast.

COLLECTING IN THE INTERNET AGE
“eBay-Collecting” will be the subject of Cathy Margolin’s
presentation at Computer Friends at the Oasis Senior Center in Corona
del Mar at 1 p.m. Wednesday. She will cover how to automate various
sources on the Internet, how to search for unique items and how to
protect yourself in the auction environment. Margolin has been buying
and selling antiques on eBay and the Internet since 1999.
Margolin teaches computers at Cal State Fullerton and is president
of North Orange County Computer Club and Assn. of Information
Technology Professionals, as well as a member of Haviland Collectors
International Foundations. A potluck picnic will be held before the
meeting at 11:15 a.m. If you wish to attend, bring a dish to share or
$5 and RSVP to Lynn Cathcart at (949) 673-3703.
LOOKING FOR OFFICE SPACE
Once again, Newport Mesa Board of Education member Judy Franco is
the Republican Party chairman for the cities of Costa Mesa and
Newport Beach for this November’s election, and she is looking for
office space for volunteers to use. She is looking for ground-floor
space on a well-traveled street in either city, with ample parking
for the dozens of volunteers who will staff the phone banks from
mid-August to Election Day on Nov. 2. Judy says they can even pay
rent.
If you have space available, give her a call at (949) 675-2603.
