Poloists earn pair of sixth-place finishes
Both the Laguna Beach High girls’ and boys’ water polo teams
earned sixth-place finishes in weekend tournament play.
Laguna’s girls traveled to Santa Barbara High to take part in the
invitation-only, Mystical High School Championships, a tournament
that drew 24 of the Southland’s top programs.
Laguna posted a 2-2 record.
The Breakers opened the tournament by defeating Clovis West, 10-7,
and also defeated Pacific Coast League rival Corona del Mar, 9-4.
They lost to Newport Harbor, 8-5, and Poway, 10-6.
Against Newport Harbor, Laguna was in a 5-5 tie with two minutes
remaining in regulation play against the defending CIF-Southern
Section Division I champion Sailors, who managed to pull away in the
closing minutes.
“I was a bit skeptical heading up to the tournament, just because
I didn’t know how the girls would respond to playing such top-notch
competition at this point in the season,” Laguna Coach Rick McKee
said. “But, the girls really rose to the occasion and truly came
together as a team.”
Laguna outscored its four opponents, 37-22.
“It’s been my philosophy that your offense comes from your
defense, and I thought that after that first game, we played solid
defense,” McKee said. “I was really happy with our play.”
Also that same weekend, Laguna’s boys’ team placed sixth at the
Villa Park Tournament.
Like the girls’ team, the boys posted a 2-2 record in tournament
play.
Laguna’s boys travel to Santa Barbara High this weekend to compete
in tournament play.
The Laguna under-16 team will be in San Diego to compete at the
California State Games at Mira Mar College.
