South All-Stars hammer North

For Luke Sapolu, it was a final game to represent Costa Mesa High.

For Mark Temple, it was likely his last football game in pads. For

Matt Encinias, it was a warm-up before facing collegiate opponents.

The trio were all on the winning side of the Rebels’ 22-7 victory

over the Yankees in the Orange County North-South all-star game at

the Santa Ana Bowl Friday night.

“It was cool to come away with the ‘w,’ ” said Temple, a defensive

tackle for the South Rebels who also played offensive guard for

Newport Harbor.

Temple will attend the University of Redlands in the fall and is

undecided if he will play football again.

Sapolu was the long snapper on special teams for the South and

played at guard in the second half. He was called for a holding

penalty in the third quarter, despite the defender clearly falling on

his own accord.

“The guy just slipped and I stayed on top of him, but the ref

thought I was holding,” Sapolu said. The 6-foot, 255-pound lineman

will take a year off to bulk up before heading to the University of

Hawaii to play college ball.

Encinias finished his All-Star appearance with a solid all-around

effort. He finished with one catch for 12 yards, two ruses for nine

yards, and one kickoff return for 23 yards.

“It feel it was a great opportunity for me to play,” said

Encinias, who will play at Orange coast College in the fall. “I would

have been happy just to be out there for one special teams’ play.”
