Residents thumbs down on Marinapark project and study

Please do not let developers take this pristine area and put a hotel

at Marinapark. Traffic is terrible now. Parking is ridiculous now.

Five cars at a time are lined up now on Bay Avenue; it’s full of kids

and mothers looking for a spot. Today, the city of Newport Beach has

day care for kids at Mothers Beach. The toddlers feel safe here

because the water is shallow, and no big waves are here. We would put

these children in jeopardy with traffic and drunken drivers from the

restaurants at the hotel. Keep the park for the public and reject the

environmental report because it does not address these concerns.

The Newport Beach City Council will be setting themselves up for

hefty and drawn-out lawsuits if they certify the Marinapark

environmental report.

The report is filled with inaccuracies and deficiencies.

The Newport Beach City Council is doing its absolute best to rush

this project to meet the election schedule. The council needs to slow

this down, step back a few yards and listen to their constituents --

the residents and property owners of Newport Beach Peninsula.

The environmental report is not adequate and should be voted down,

until revised. However, that won’t happen. This is a done deal, as it

has been for a long time. Developer Stephen Sutherland is an insider

and has had an unfair advantage since the so- called process started.

I live across the street from the proposed development. What is

the city thinking in considering this type of growth? Well, they

aren’t thinking; they are responding to money. City leaders need to

demonstrate that Newport Beach is not for sale.

LINDA OROZCO

I strongly object to the environmental report for the Marinapark

proposal by developer Stephen Sutherland. It does not address many

important issues. It is inadequate.

DOROTHY BEEK

The information on the best alternative in the Marinapark

environmental report was flawed.

The report compared the proposed hotel to itself instead of using

one of the other alternatives. The best alternative is an open space,

aquatic, recreational park. There should not be a vote in November to

amend the general plan to allow commercial use of public land. To

lease public park land so a single developer can make a huge profit

from the sale of timeshares with little hope of making the promised

transient occupancy tax for the city is unconscionable. To lose this

8.1 acres of prime bay front, now set aside for public use, would be

a shame. By not certifying the report for this project, there will

not be a vote in November. If it is certified, then a “no” vote for

amending the General Plan must be cast on the ballot in November.

In our view, a hotel to replace Marinapark is a developer’s view

of this world. No to these developers, who would ravage this

Peninsula area.
