K.C. Explorers exact revenge on Newport

The Newport Beach Breakers continued their recent slide with their

third straight loss, this time a 22-21 overtime setback to the host

Kansas City Explorers Wednesday night in a World Team Tennis Western

Conference match.

The Explorers (4-6) snapped a three-match losing streak by

claiming the final two sets, including Alex Kim and David

MacPherson’s 5-4 (5-3) victory over Newport’s Ramon Delgado and Ellis

Ferreira in men’s doubles.

Kansas City won all three tiebreakers to exact revenge on the

Breakers (7-5), who defeated the Explorers Saturday, 25-13. Delgado

and Aniko Kapros each won singles matches for Newport Wednesday.

The Breakers began the week just 1 1/2 matches behind Sacramento

for the conference lead, but consecutive losses to the Capitals

earlier in the week and Wednesday’s setback dropped them four back

with only two to play. Sacramento (11-1) has won the conference

crown.

Newport ends the season with road matches at New York on Saturday

and Hartford on Sunday.
