CLASSICS RESTORED
Restoration Hardware has just opened at South Coast Plaza. Explore
a setting of classically-designed quality furniture, textiles,
lighting, bath ware, hardware and novelty items. Restoration Hardware
was founded in 1979 by Stephen Gordon, who grew tired of spending
time tracking down period hardware and home furnishings to restore
his Queen Anne Victorian fixer-upper in Eureka. Gordon sensed a void.
There wasn’t a one-stop home furnishings and accessories store that
could outfit his home properly. In 1980, he opened the first
Restoration Hardware in his home. Now it’s a destination store for
high quality bedding, lighting, furniture, flooring, window
coverings, outdoor furniture and more. Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday
to Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Sunday. Level 2, Crate & Barrel/Macy’s Home Store Wing. (714)

IT’S THE SHOES
The first Vans Shoes store opened in Anaheim in 1966, offering
just a few shoes. In 1976, skateboarders began to favor wearing Vans
shoes with their unique, gripping, waffle soles. They requested that
Vans come out with different color combinations. Vans responded in
that same year with the first Era shoe. It was red and blue and was
designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, two pro skaters. Other color
combinations soon followed.
In 1979, the Slip-On was introduced and it became the fad of
Southern California. Those shoes took off in popularity nationally
when teenagers saw Sean Penn wearing Vans checkerboard slip-ons in
the 1982 film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
The Vans footwear collection now features more than 60 styles.
There are classic deck shoes, slip-ons, high performance skateboard
shoes, sandals and more. Styles are available for men, women and
children, and there’s an apparel line too.
Now Vans shoes are sold internationally, and there are more than
100 company-owned retail locations. Great sales are offered from time
to time. You can also order custom shoes through Vans’ website
(www.vans.com/customs) and have them sent directly to you. There are
more than 23 patterns and colors to choose from. Open 10 a.m. to 8
p.m. Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. 1666 Newport Blvd.
in Newport Beach (949) 642-5753. www.vans.com.
