Music in the Park kicks off Sunday

Sunday marks the first concert of the nine-week season of Music in

the Park with “The LA Mambo Combo’s” Latin sounds. “Jumpin’ Joz” hits

the stage with swing music Aug. 1, and blues fill the park Aug. 8

with “Mojo Filter Blues.” Latin rock music by “Savor” is on Aug. 15

and reggae by “Lion Heart” is featured Aug. 22.

The concerts are free and run from 5 to 7 p.m. Bring blankets,

beverages and a picnic basket. The concerts are at Bluebird Park at

the corner of Bluebird Drive and Cress Street. For information call

No Square to present ‘Babes in Arms’

Bree Burgess Rosen will direct the Rodgers and Hart musical “Babes

in Arms’ being performed Aug. 6 though Aug. 8. The musical score

includes “I Wish I Were in Love Again,” “Where or When,” “My Funny

Valentine,” “Lady is a Tramp” and others.

Valentine White will be played by No Square’s 2004 scholarship

winner, Christian Mariner. Alex Murrel and Jesse Fair play the

love/hate duo Terry and Gus. Ken Jillson, the creator, writer and

star of “Splash,” is playing the “hack southern playwright” and will

be making his No Square debut.

Also starring are members of the youth theater program of No

Square -- the “Square Roots.” Adam Hemming co-directs and is the

musical director, and Vanessa Schneller is the choreographer.

“Babes in Arms” will be performed at the Artists’ Theatre at 625

Park Ave. Showtime is at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m.

Sunday. Tickets are $18 for adults, and seniors and children are $12.

‘100 Artists See God’ at Laguna museum

Laguna Art Museum opens its newest exhibit, “100 Artists See God,”

on Aug. 1. It’s a look at artistic debate, beliefs and it

acknowledges the prevalence of religion and spirituality in

contemporary art, culture and politics both in the United States and

abroad.

Curated by artists John Baldessari and Meg Cranston, “100 Artists

See God” will travel through 2005 at museums across the U.S.

The exhibition brings 100 works by 100 artists who explore

different notions of God, spiritual power and religion. Artists

Eleanor Antin, Chris Burden, Rebecca Horn, Mike Kelley, Liz Larner,

Louise Lawler, Tony Oursler, Paul Pfeiffer, Ed Ruscha, and Diana

Thater, as well as many younger artists are participating.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 3 and has many related events. “Talk

of the Town Lectures” include Jeffery Vallance, a contributing artist

to the exhibit. He will conduct a slide lecture on his art.

Crantson, artist and co-curator of the exhibit, will conduct a

gallery talk on the development and organization of the exhibition as

well as specific works of art at 11 a.m. Aug. 22.

A panel discussion moderated by curators Tyler Stallings and Mike

McGee is at 1 p.m. Aug. 29. The panelists will be contributing

artists to the exhibit and Cal State Fullerton’s Grand Central Art

Center exhibition, “100 Artists See Satan.”

‘Super Size Me’ showing in Laguna

As part of their ongoing foreign and independent film series

Laguna South Coast Cinemas Regency Theatre is showing the critically

acclaimed and film-festival favorite “Super Size Me” 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The award-winning, tongue-in-cheek documentary is about the legal,

financial and physical costs of America’s hunger for fast food.

Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock hit the road and interviewed experts in

20 U.S. cities, including Houston, the “fattest city” in the U.S.

From surgeon generals to gym teachers, cooks to kids, lawmakers to

legislators, authorities shared their research, opinions and “gut

feelings” on ever-expanding waist lines.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and children and

students with valid identification are $7. The theater is at 162 S.

Shanti OC benefit hosted by museum

The third annual benefit to help Shanti OC, formerly Laguna

Shanti, to “Hunks in Trunks and Babes in Bikinis” will be held at

Laguna Art Museum 7 p.m. Aug. 7.

This year they have added the babes in bikinis portion to appeal

to a larger audience. It will include a fashion show of scantily clad

swimwear models, cuisine, cocktails, a DJ and a live auction with

items including many trip packages in destinations around the world.

Woody’s at the Beach is a sponsor and the creator of the original

event. The funds go to the Shanti, which is dedicated to improving

the quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS.
