Three more inducted into community circle

Family and friends inducted three of their loved ones into Costa

Mesa’s Circle of Service Friday. The circle, which surrounds the

fountain at the downtown Neighborhood Community Center, honors people

who, in their lives, spent thousands of hours volunteering for the

city.

Friday, the circle expanded to include Tom Thompson, Nora Gonzalez

Maher and Timothy Richey.

House passes another water-quality bill

Another bill to enhance the quality of Orange County water passed

the House of Representatives Friday. The bill, sponsored by Rep.

Loretta Sanchez (D-Anaheim) and Rep. Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar),

increases authorization for the groundwater replenishment system from

$20 million to $80 million.

The system is a new, high-tech water purification system that will

produce water of similar quality to bottled water. It does this by

taking highly treated sewer water and purifying it to

near-distilled-quality water though a system that includes

microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light with hydrogen

peroxide. Reverse osmosis treatment diminishes the amount of

dissolved solids, including a variety of ions, metals and asbestos

particles, that can be found in water.

The purified water will become part of a seawater barrier and also

be pumped through a pipeline to recharge basins in Anaheim, where it

will seep into deep aquifers and blend with the county’s other

sources of groundwater.

The barrier will help keep the water supply clean and safe, said

Rebecca Long, spokeswoman for the Orange County Water District.
