Santa Ana Country Club’s Marianne Towersey finished in a tie for 17th
place with Rio Bravo Country Club’s Allison Martin to lead the
Newport-Mesa contingent at the California Women’s State Championship
contested July 19-21 at the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook.
Towersey shot 78-82-75 -- 235 for three rounds while Charlotte
Mayorkas of the Southern California Golf Association Members Course
in Murrieta (68-68-72 -- 208) claimed the championship by 12 strokes
over Jennifer Sanders (74-75-71 -- 220) of Alta Vista Country Club.
Ninety-one golfers completed the tournament.
Madelaine Campbell of Mesa Verde Country Club (84-79-83 -- 246)
placed 28th while Nancy Mockett (83-88-84 -- 255) finished 44th.
Kayleigh Horn, who will be a senior at Newport Harbor High this fall,
shot 93-99-96 -- 288.
* Costa Mesa resident Richard Kidder teamed with Kyle Llewellyn of
Huntington Beach to win the SCGA affiliate team championship by three
strokes over San Pedro’s Grant Beachley and Mike McLachlan July 19-20
at the Bajamar Oceanfront Golf Resort in Ensenada, Baja California
Mexico.
Kidder and Llewellyn shot 63-72 -- 135 on the par-72 Vista/Oceano
course and par-71 Oceano/Lagos course, respectively.
Costa Mesa resident Steve Metro and Glen Shepard of Orange placed
14th out of 25 teams after shooting (77-76 -- 153).
