Pelican Hill’s Glenn Deck displays the backswing

You want to turn as you swing the club back. The question is, how far

should your backswing be? The keys are: Making sure that your right

knee remains flexed, your spine angle has not changed, your weight is

favoring your back foot and your hands maintain their width to create

a big arc. If any of these items are out of position, then you are

out of position to start your downswing. Practice swinging a heavy

club, as in the picture, to get a better feel for how far back your

swing should be based on your flexibility. Golfers often take the

club too far back and too far inside. The right arm pulls the club

back in this instance.
