Man dies after car skids into bike

A Santa Ana bicyclist died early Monday after suffering head

injuries Sunday in a crash in Huntington Beach.

Timothy Arndt, 42, of Santa Ana was riding his bicycle south on

Brookhurst Street toward Pacific Coast Highway at about 8:30 p.m. on

Sunday when he made a left turn and crossed the southbound lanes.

Kourosh Sabouri 54, of Anaheim slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting

Arndt, but his Toyota sedan skidded into Arndt’s bicycle. Arndt was

thrown off his bicycle and rolled over the hood of Sabouri’s car

before hitting the street, Lt. Ed Deuel said.

Arndt was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where he died at

3:20 a.m. on Monday. Sabouri was not cited, and the accident is still

under investigation.

Police arrest man after pursuit

Huntington Beach police chased a burglary suspect to the “Orange

Crush” freeway interchange on Sunday before turning their pursuit

over to the California Highway Patrol, who arrested the man in

Baldwin Park.

Police received a call that a man was taking property out of a

warehouse and loading it into a white pickup truck on Transistor Lane

at 9:56 a.m. on Sunday, Sgt. Dave Bunetta said. Police confirmed that

an unknown amount of roller skates and roller skate parts were

missing from the warehouse.

A white pickup truck matching the description from the call was

spotted by police on Bolsa Chica Road shortly after 10 a.m. When

police signaled the driver to stop, the driver sped north before

getting onto the Garden Grove freeway and fleeing east, police said.

Officers in two police cars, aided by a helicopter from the Costa

Mesa police department, followed the truck all the way to the

interchange with the Orange Freeway. Huntington Beach police were

called off the chase and the highway patrol, still assisted from

above by the helicopter, took over, Bunetta said.

The driver, 45-year-old Steven B. Corning, took the Orange Freeway

north into Los Angeles County and continued until he reached the San

Gabriel River Freeway in Baldwin Park, Bunetta said. He later ditched

the truck and was arrested about 45 minutes later, police said.

Roller skates and parts were found in the truck. Huntington Beach

police booked Corning on suspicion of commercial burglary and evading

police officers.

Hearing today for man accused of murder

A preliminary hearing for John Angel Salcida, who is charged with

the murder of his estranged wife’s boyfriend, is scheduled for today.

It was delayed July 22 in Superior Court in Westminster.

Salcida is charged with the stabbing death of Sergio Ojeda, his

estranged wife’s boyfriend, in a Huntington Beach apartment on Nov.

6, 2003. Salcida is also accused of kidnapping and attempted spousal

rape and committing spousal rape and sexual penetration by foreign

object by force. If convicted, Salcida could be eligible for the

death penalty, officials said.

Tax protester to be arraigned

The arraignment for a man who believes taxes are unconstitutional,

and who owned electronics companies in Surf City, was delayed until

Aug. 2.

George “Nick” Jesson, 53, is facing six felony tax evasion counts

for allegedly filing false tax returns in 1998 and 2000. His wife,

Trina Thi, 40, is accused of filing four fraudulent tax returns in

the same years. The two allegedly failed to report more than $3

million of income.

George Jesson owned the Huntington Beach companies CD Electronics,

Capacitor Specialists International and No Time Delay Electronics. He

ran for the Republican nomination for governor in 2002 and his photo

ran in advertisements for “We the People for Constitutional

Education,” an organization that believes income taxes are

unconstitutional.

Thi and Jesson were arrested in September 2003, and pleaded not

guilty during pretrial proceedings in December. In felony cases,

defendants enter a plea a second time once the case goes to trial.
