“On all matters, we cannot speak on the reasons for the integrity of

the school and the rights of the coach, even if the story is

one-sided.”

-- Fred Navarro, Costa Mesa High School principal, during a

meeting Monday with players and their parents about the firing of

football coach Dave Perkins.

“Why did you fire our coach?”

-- Juan Diaz, a Costa Mesa High School football player, during the

same meeting.

“I’ve done other things, and I enjoy this the most. A 9-to-5 job

just doesn’t fit me.”

-- Stephen Russell, who along with his father, Edward, runs the

Russell Brothers Family Fun Circus at the Orange County Fair.

“We well understand how badly he wanted to have the state budget

adopted on time -- that was a keynote to his campaign, and it might

have been real easy for him to kind of turn local government aside

and say, ‘Gee folks, I tried but I’m not going to hold up the entire

state budget just over your issue.’”

-- Allan Roeder, Costa Mesa city manager, on the $105.3-billion

state budget OKd last week.

“Does this council wish to be remembered as one that sold the last

park site for profit?”

-- Patricia Frostholm, a Newport Beach resident and an opponent of

the planned resort development at Marinapark, during Tuesday’s

late-running City Council meeting on the topic. The council approved

sending the proposal to voters in November.

“I don’t think voters are going to know heads or tails what

they’re voting on.”

-- John Heffernan, Newport Beach city councilman, on the

Marinapark proposal. He was one of three to vote against the plan

being put on the ballot.
