* About 80% of people infected with the virus show no symptoms at

all.

* About 20% of people may develop mild symptoms, including fever,

headache and body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph

glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms

usually last a few days and don’t require medical attention.

* About one in 150 people may develop a serious case of the virus.

Those symptoms include a high fever, headache, neck stiffness,

stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision

loss, numbness, paralysis and coma. They may last several weeks and

some effects may be permanent.

* People who think they may have symptoms of West Nile Virus

should wait a few days to see if they pass, said Pat Markley with the

Orange County Health Care Agency. If symptoms persist, see your

physician.
