Man accidentally shoots off toe

A Costa Mesa man accidentally shot himself in the foot while

taking a gun out of his car on Tuesday, police reported.

John Julian was removing a 12-gauge shotgun from his car’s trunk

in the 2900 block of Peppertree Lane at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday,

Costa Mesa Cpl. Garth Wilson said. Julian thought the gun was

unloaded and accidentally fired it, Wilson said.

The gun fired into the ground, shooting one of the man’s toes off,

he said. Police are not investigating the shooting because it was

accidental.

Failed equipment causes outage

A downed power line stopped traffic and caused an outage in Costa

Mesa Tuesday afternoon, police reported.

The line fell across Red Hill Avenue between Paularino and

McCormick avenues at about noon on Tuesday, Costa Mesa Cpl. Garth

Wilson said. Police declared a SigAlert for about an hour while crews

made repairs, he said.

“It was a live electrical power line,” Wilson said. “It was

popping and sparking.”

Equipment failure caused the line to go down, said Eddie Marquez,

spokesman for Southern California Edison. About 475 customers lost

power for three hours while the crews made the repairs.

City workers also made repairs to the damaged street, Wilson said.

No one was injured.
