Swim club goes big at Junior Olympics

Athletes from the Golden West Swim Club posted winning results at the

2004 Southern California Swimming Summer Junior Olympics “Blue”

competition held at the Janet Evans Swim Complex in Fullerton.

Cindy Tran led the Golden West contingent by winning three gold

medals.

Tran, 12, competing in the girls 11-12 division, won the 50-meter

long course freestyle, 50-meter long course backstroke and 50-meter

long course butterfly.

Tran also was fifth in the 200-meter long course individual medley

relay.

She also swam the fourth leg on Golden West’s 11-12 200-meter long

course free relay team, which finished second in the event. Also on

the team were Jennifer Lai, Shelby Paul and Harley Owens.

Tran also was the lead leg and joined Lai, Owens and Paul in

leading Golden West to a third-place finish in the 11-12 400-meter

free relay.

Golden West’s Allison Gillespie had a big meet in the girls

10-and-under division.

The 10-year-old won the gold in the 50-meter long course free, was

second in both the 100-meter free and 50-meter breaststroke and

placed third in the 200-meter free, 100-meter breaststroke and

200-meter individual medley.

In the boys competition, Golden West’s Josh Roe , competing in the

11-12 division, placed third in the 50-meter free, 100-meter free and

50-meter butterfly, fifth in the 50-meter backstroke and ninth in the

100-meter backstroke.

Teammate Christopher Huynh placed fourth in the 50-meter free and

fifth in the 100-meter free.

Roe swam the final leg on a Golden West free relay team composed

of Gabriel Rodriquez, Clark Pitti and Huynh that finished second in

the 200-meter free relay.

He also swam the fourth leg on Golden West’s third-place 400-meter

free relay team composed of Rodriquez, Pitti and Christopher Huynh.

That same foursome placed third in the 200-meter medley relay and

fifth in the 400-meter medley relay.

In the boys’ 10-and-under 200-meter free relay, Golden West’s team

of Alex Tran, Pitti, Thomas Gillespie and John Lovat finished sixth

and the same foursome placed sixth in the 200-meter medley relay.

In the boys 13-14 division 200-meter free relay, Golden West’s

team of Chris Esguerra, Kenny Bray, Henry Huynh and Julian Bonse

placed seventh.

Local soccer club girls’ team wins cup title

The California Futbol Club Black girls under-19 team of Huntington

Beach won its division title at the Long Beach Pyramid Cup held at

Cal State Long Beach.

Keeper Diana Eskander didn’t allow any goals and with the aid of a

solid defense in front of her, shut out each of its four tournament

opponents.

The Black met Corona United Liberty in its first game and won by a

decisive, 3-0 score.

In its second game against the Poway Vaqueros, defense paved the

way in a 1-0 victory. The third win was a 2-0 blanking of the South

Bay SC Blues.

In the championship game that featured a rematch, the Black

emerged with its second 1-0 victory over the Poway Vaqueros.

Scoring goals for the Black were Julie Fleener, who scored the

team’s first goal of the tournament, Nikki Freiborg, Sami Rodden and

Allison Baumann.
