Jake Winters, 6, tries to avoid being hit by a ball thrown by

recreational leader Dustin Fristed during a game of dodge ball as

part of the Costa Mesa’s Summer Playground Program at the Balearic

Community CenterMonday.

Photographer Douglas Zimmerman was busy answering Jake’s many

inquiries, leaving his back turned on the game, when he noticed

Fristed sneaking up on Jake with ball in hand. Zimmerman got the

camera ready without trying to alert Jake, and the moment came

together as the ball left Fristed’s hand. Jake realized he was about

to be nailed and Zimmerman clicked the shutter.
