Robert Caton, who works in the guest services department at Pelican

Hill Golf Club in Newport Coast, finished 12-over par through the

first two days of stroke play of the United States Amateur golf

championship, but failed to advance to the match-play portion of the

tournament that begins today at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck,

N.Y.

Caton, playing in his first U.S. Amateur, finished in a tie for

99th after shooting a 2-over 74 on Winged Foot’s East Course Monday

and an 8-over 78 on the West Course Tuesday. The top 64 golfers --

the final cut was 10-over -- from a field of 312 advanced to match

play.

Newport Beach resident Steve Conway (77-77 -- 154) finished the

first two days of stroke play in a tie for 128th in his third U.S.

Amateur.

Ryan Moore (69-70 -- 139) from Puyallup, Wash., was the only

golfer to shoot under par (1-under) through the first two days of

stroke play -- two players were at even par -- and leads the field.
