Complaints concerning

the Gap aren’t enough

I couldn’t agree more with Maxine Cohen’s Community Commentary in

Friday’s Pilot (“Self-esteem more than window dressing”), but had she

expressed her feelings to the Gap’s corporate office? If she’d not,

she’s still part of the problem. As Katharine Hepburn said, “If

you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” I have

written to companies whose merchandise is offensive and, in one case,

received the most apologetic letter. Others seem to revise their ads,

etc. So, Maxine, go to the corporate office and tell them how you

feel.

Privatization thwarting

the area’s open space

In regard to Tod Ridgeway’s Sunday Community Commentary on the

Marinapark hotel/timeshare issue, (“City could never satisfy

Greenlight on resort”): Of course, he had to pull out the “help us

pay for the police and fire department” card.

I would expect nothing less from a developer. And when he

mentioned the traffic issue (less for the hotel/timeshare, more for

the park), I think he thought the hotel must be manned by ghosts or

else environmentally savvy employees, who will walk to work and make

deliveries on bicycles. But regardless, it boils down to private

enterprise taking over public open space. It’s not right.
