Noteworthy: Caves shot a 1-under-par 141 to win the senior

flight’s gross division by two strokes playing in his first Costa

Mesa city championship, which concluded Aug. 8 at Costa Mesa Golf &

Country Club. Caves shot 1-under 71 on the longer Los Lagos course

Aug. 7 while carding an even-par 70 on the Mesa Linda course the

following day. Caves, a Big Canyon member for 30 years, said he

putted well and gave credit to course superintendent Jim Fetterly.

“The greens were in remarkable condition. They were tournament-type

fast and that is the way they should be,” Caves said. Learned how to

play golf at age 9 from Betty Hicks, one of the women who aided in

the early growth and development of the Ladies Professional Golf

Association who also was a teaching pro at Los Coyotes Country Club

in Buena Park at the time. Won the Los Angeles Junior Open.
