School gear giveaway set for Friday

On Friday, incoming fifth-graders at Oak View Elementary School

will be able to pick up free backpacks loaded with school supplies.

The gear being donated by the Zonta Club of Newport Harbor, a

women’s group that works to benefit women and children, club member

Barbara Sisson said. There will be 130 backpacks available, which

will come loaded with paper, pencils, crayons and other items that

can come in handy during the school year.

This will be the fourth year the club has donated supplies to

students at Oak View, where most of the students are English

learners. Parents of incoming fifth-graders only need to show up and

bring their children to the school. The youngsters will be able to

choose their own backpacks.

“They let them in a few at a time so they can pick up a backpack,”

Sisson said. “It’s just fun to watch the kids.”

The giveaway will begin at noon at the school’s multipurpose room.
