Furgatch claims gold

Sarah Furgatch, who will enter eighth grade at Corona del Mar Junior

High this fall, claimed a gold medal in the 100-yard breaststroke in

the Long Course Junior Olympics, held Aug. 4-8, in Mission Viejo.

Furgatch, who began swimming for the Newport Hills swim team and

now trains with the Irvine Aquazot swim club, dropped more than two

seconds in completing the race in 1:18.73, a personal-best.

Furgatch accumulated six other medals spanning the 50

breaststroke, 200 freestyle, 200 free relay, 200 medley relay, 400

freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay. She also placed fifth in

the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 100 free.
