Crosson’s goal paces narrow OCC victory

Orange Coast College freshman Christine Crosson scored in the 62nd

minute to lead the host Pirates to a 1-0 nonconference win over

Cerritos Friday.

OCC allowed just one shot on goal as goalkeepers Kara DeMille, a

Newport Harbor High product, and Michelle Vahdatipour combined for

the shutout.

After a listless 45 minutes in windy conditions, the Pirates used

some crisp passing to produce the game’s only score.

Jenny Chavis won the ball near the OCC bench and slotted it to

Sarah Ronquillo, who laid it off to Lizzy Terry. An errant shot found

its way to Jill Cordoza just outside the left post. Cordoza’s shot

beat Cerritos goalie Marysol Rice, but it needed a tap-in by Crosson,

a forward, to cross the goal line.

OCC (2-0) dominated possession the final 20 minutes as Taryn

Flamson, a freshman out of Newport Harbor High, Danielle Heronema, a

freshman from Colorado, and Jamie Whitham, a freshman from El Toro

High, all stood out for the hosts.

Allison Sarell had the lone shot for Cerritos, while Rice totaled

five saves on 10 Orange Coast shots.

OCC visits Palomar Wednesday at 3 p.m. for its first road

challenge. Coach Matt Tutton’s Pirates then begin Orange Empire

Conference play Sept. 10 with a home clash against Saddleback.

Zaltosky tribute slated

* TRIBUTE: A tribute to the late Craig Zaltosky, a former two-time

junior college All-American football player for Orange Coast College

who was killed in an automobile accident in Hawaii May 24 at the age

school single-season record.

He had 17 career interceptions as a Pirate and was the South Coast

Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. His four punt

returns for touchdowns is also a school career record.

In addition to football, Zaltosky played rugby at Stanford and he

later competed for the Newport Beach Rugby Club .

Zaltosky lived in Southern California after obtaining his

bachelor’s degree from Stanford. He moved to Kona, Hawaii to start

his own business.

College.
