John Wayne Airport officials offer tips

John Wayne Airport officials suggest the following travel tips to

make flying on Labor Day weekend smoother: Arrive at least an

hour-and-a-half before your flight; limit carry-on baggage, since

most flights are filled to capacity; and be prepared for screening.

New security checkpoints opened in June at the airport. Passenger

levels reached record highs at the airport during June and July.

Using music to raise funds at Alta Cafe

A fundraiser at Alta Cafe in Newport Beach will be held on Sept.

19 to benefit the Human Exchange Musical Programs. Costa Mesa

resident Tyler Hoff, 20, founded the program and is raising money to

travel to East Africa next June to help AIDS prevention programs and

assist children with access to cultural, music and language

education. Hoff’s goal is to raise $25,000 by April 4.

The fundraiser will start at 7:30 p.m. at the cafe at 506 31st

Race for the Cure looking for volunteers

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is seeking volunteers

for its annual Race for the Cure in Orange County.

More than 30,000 participants are expected to run or walk the

race, which will take place on Sept. 26 at Fashion Island. The event

raises funds for breast-health programs in Orange County and for

national breast cancer research.

No previous experience is necessary to volunteer. Individuals or

groups of volunteers are needed especially on the day of the event to

help with parking and other operations. Volunteer positions are also

available for preregistration events and other activities on the

weekend of the event.
