Estancia rolls in tennis
Junior Heather Morton and Yvonne Zaidler each swept in singles to
help the host Estancia High girls tennis team continue to roll in the
Golden West League with a 16-2 victory over Orange Thursday.
Morton, playing singles for the first time in her three-year
varsity career, lost five games while Sara Stratton took two of three
singles sets for Estancia, coming off an undefeated (12-0)
league-title season.
Junior Sage O’Toole paired with two different partners, Elizabeth
Armstrong and Kirsten Miller, to sweep in doubles while senior Marci
Kirchberg and junior Sarah Muradian also claimed three sets.
Sage Hill starts strong
* TENNIS: Junior Grace Graham and freshman Brina Dokage swept in
doubles to help lead Sage Hill School to a 14-4 nonleague girls
tennis victory over host Calvary Chapel at the Costa Mesa Tennis
Center Thursday.
Sage sophomore Sarah Geocaris lost just one game in winning two
sets before freshman Alex Williams took her place. Sophomore
Stephanie Langer claimed all three of her singles sets for Sage
(1-0), including one by default.
Senior Sarah Flynn and partner Carissa Cummings took two of three
doubles sets for Sage, which hosts nonleague foe Laguna Beach at the
Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club at 3 p.m. today.
Sailors, Wolverines tie
* FIELD HOCKEY: Junior Danica Kalmbach scored only goal for the
Newport Harbor High field hockey team, but it was enough to tie
visiting Harvard-Westlake, 1-1, in a nonleague game Thursday at
Harper School.
Senior Jenny Taylor sent in the assist to Kalmbach, standing near
the post, to give Newport a 1-0 lead in the second half.
Harvard-Westlake tied the game off a corner with four minutes
remaining.
Senior Ciara Lawrence made nine saves in goal for the Sailors
(1-0-1) while sisters Rachel and Lyndsi Foster played aggressively at
the midfield and on defense, Newport Coach Piper Archibald said.
DeHaas paces VU
* VOLLEYBALL: Junior Keri DeHaas finished with match highs in
kills (18) and digs (22) to lead the host Vanguard University women’s
volleyball team to its fourth straight victory with a 30-23, 30-23,
30-25 Golden State Athletic Conference win over Christian Heritage
Thursday.
Sonrisa Peace and Jaclyn Lee tallied 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while setter Marissa Cothran dished 44 assists for
Vanguard (7-2, 2-0 in the GSAC). Christian Heritage fell to 1-5, 0-2.
Mustangs singled out
* TENNIS: Costa Mesa High’s girls tennis team won seven of nine
doubles sets in its season opener, but Westminster claimed all nine
singles sets and an 11-7 Golden West League victory Thursday.
Mesa’s No. 2 doubles team of Leah Le and Hong-An Nguyen swept
their three sets while Anh Le and Gwen Martinez, along with the
tandem of Maria Garcia and Uyen Le, each claimed two sets for the
Mustangs.
CdM, Tars compete
* GOLF: Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team finished ninth out
of 19 squads in the inaugural Shootout at Strawberry Farms tournament
Thursday.
Katie McKitterick led the Sea Kings with an 84, followed by
teammates Caitlin McDonald (91), Katie Albright (91), Jonna Kim (95)
and Maggie Nelson (99).
CdM shot 462 while Newport Harbor placed 16th with a 496 in the
season-opening 18-hole tournament. Natalie Draganza and Kayleigh Horn
each shot 89 for Harbor.
Defending state champion Peninsula won with a 413, followed by San
Clemente (432) and PCL foe University (438).
CdM faces Santa Margarita at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dove Canyon
Country Club before taking on Newport at the same time at Newport
Beach Country Club Thursday.
