Smooth opener for Sea Kings
Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team opened up its season claiming
eight of nine doubles sets and defeated visiting Mater Dei, 15-3, in
a nonleague duel Thursday.
Sophomore Jillian Braverman lost just one game in sweeping her
three singles sets while sophomore Jill Damion and freshman Allie
Walters each claimed two sets.
CdM’s Hayley Young and Jamie Steele took two of three sets in the
No. 1 doubles slot while the duos of Miranda Young and Lindsay
Norman, along with Rachael Miller and Michelle Atkins, each won two
sets.
Stephanie Chen and Kelly McKitterick teamed to win one set while
Roxanne Kaiden and Miller combined to down Mater Dei’s top doubles
duo.
CdM’s first-year coach Brian Ricker said his players have
practiced aggressiveness at the net and translated those skills to
Thursday’s match.
The Sea Kings begin a stretch of three road matches with a
nonleague duel at Woodbridge at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
