Sailors handle Costa Mesa

The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team opened its season with a

17-1 nonleague home victory over Costa Mesa Friday.

The Sailors’ No. 3 doubles team of junior Megan McKay and freshman

Alex McIntosh were the lone Harbor tandem to win all three matches

without a substitution.

Junior Brittanny Sturgess and senior Jill Casserly swept at Nos. 1

and 2 singles for the Sailors.

Estancia trounces Tillers

* Estancia High sophomore Sara Stratton rallied to defeat fellow

No. 1 singles player Michelle Franco of Tustin and went on to sweep

her three sets to help the Eagles defeat the visiting Tillers, 14-4,

in nonleague girls tennis action Friday.

Seniors Marci Kirchberg and Yvonne Zaidler combined to sweep at

No. 1 doubles for the Eagles (2-0).

Tustin is now 0-1.

Breakers edge Lightning

* The Sage Hill School girls tennis team suffered its first loss

of the season, but not without a fight as visiting Laguna Beach

prevailed, 10-8, in a nonleague match at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet

Club Friday.

“They beat us 16-2 last year, so this is quite an improvement,”

said Lightning Coach A.G. Longoria, who singled out the play of

singles players Stephanie Langer and Sarah Giocaris.

Langer and Giocaris won two sets apiece.
