The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team improved to 6-0 with a 30-21,

30-19, 30-25 sweep of Yale in a nonconference match Friday at

Crawford Court.

UCI senior outside hitter Kelly Wing had a match-high 19 kills and

three aces while middle blockers Sami Cash and Amanda Vazquez added

eight kills apiece for the winners.

UCI setter Ashlie Hain had 43 assists and 10 digs while libero

Keegan Featherstone led the Anteaters with 14 digs.

Yale setter Jacqueline Becker, a junior out of Corona del Mar

High, had 25 assists.

The Anteaters can match the program’s best start when they open

Big West Conference action against visiting Cal State Fullerton

Wednesday at 7 p.m.

CdM outlasts Oilers

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team opened

its season with an impressive 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11 nonleague victory Friday over host Huntington Beach.

Jordan Smith, a UCLA-bound senior outside hitter, led the winners

with 16 kills, while senior middle blocker Lindsey Ensign had 14

kills and six blocks.

Senior Breanne Odgen had eight digs and three ace serves for CdM,

which also received nine kills from senior Erica Solis.

Setters Traci Lawson and Kelly Chrisitan combined for 43 assists.

UCI bedevils DePaul

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team blanked DePaul, 2-0, in

the opening game of the Lakeside Classic Friday at Northwestern

University in Evanston, Ill.

Junior Chris Klotz broke the scoreless tie on an assist by Brad

Evans in the 51st minute.

Sophomore Anthony Hamilton also scored for the Anteaters (1-2)

with assists by Corona del Mar High product Daniel Marshall and Kit

Vitagliano.

UCI junior goalkeeper Ryan Mathy earned his first shutout of the

season with three saves.

DePaul keeper Brian Allen had five saves. The Blue Demons fell to

1-2-1.

UCI will conclude the Lakeside Classic, Sunday at noon against

Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Pirates sweep Apaches

* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College earned a 30-12, 30-19, 30-18 nonconference women’s volleyball victory at Southwestern in Chula

Vista Friday.

Sophomore outside hitter Donka Drozd had 12 kills to pace the

winners (2-0), who received nine kills and six blocks from freshman

middle blocker Jennifer Holder.

OCC freshman setter Kaitlin Parker chipped in 34 assists and

Christine Ryan added six blocks for the Pirates.

Southwestern fell to 0-2.

OCC scores in bunches

* SOCCER: Orange Coast College’s Sarah Ronquillo scored three

goals and teammate Jenny Chavis added two -- all in a 10-minute span

in the second half -- as the host Pirates defeated Saddleback, 5-0,

in an Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer opener Friday.

Ronquillo broke a scoreless tie in the 15th minute of the second

half, igniting the OCC spurt, on a cross from Lizzie Terry, who had

two assists, while Jill Cordova had three for OCC (3-0-1, 1-0 in the

OEC). Kara DeMille recorded five goalie saves for Orange Coast.

Saddleback fell to 1-1, 0-1.

The Pirates travel to Santa Ana at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Vanguard sweeps pair

* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team

swept two matches Friday at the Whittier/Occidental tournament to

increase its winning streak to six.

The Lions swept Occidental, 30-8, 30-15, 30-27 in the afternoon,

after sweeping Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 30-16, 30-23, 30-28, in the

morning opener. Vanguard improved to 9-2.

Anteaters tie Vikings

* SOCCER: UC Irvine and Portland State played to a scoreless tie

Friday night in the UCI Nike/Holiday Inn women’s soccer invitational

at Anteater Stadium.

UCI (2-2-1) outshot the Vikings, 13-7, and UCI goalie Marissa

Welliver had six saves for her second shutout of the season.

Pacific Southwest opens

* TENNIS: Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach will host one of

the most prestigious United States Tennis Association sectional

tournaments for the ninth straight year when the 78th annual Pacific

Southwest senior tennis championships begin at 8 a.m. today.

Coast sinks Sierra

* WATER POLO: Freshman Jeannette DeMeneces scored four goals to

help the Pirates rally from a 2-0 first-quarter deficit and claim a

6-3 nonconference women’s water polo victory over Sierra Friday at

the Cypress tournament at Cypress College.

Freshmen Brittany Kane and Ann Marie Fisher added single goals for

the Pirates, who received eight saves from freshman goalie Kelly

Dargel.

In the second game of the tournament, Chaffey edged the Pirates,

11-10, in the second overtime. DeMeneces had four goals for OCC

(1-1).

Vikings edge Pirates

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team rallied from

a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie host Long Beach in the 89th minute. But

the Vikings scored in the last 10 seconds of the five-minute injury

time to gain a 3-2 nonconference win Friday.

Newport Harbor High product Jose Serpas scored both goals for OCC

(0-2-1), for which Miguel Ochoa and Mike Reid contributed assists.

OCC’s Trent Painter had four goalie saves.
