Finding some artistic inspiration

The Decorative Arts Society is in the final stages of planning its

10th annual series of programs on the decorative arts, beginning with

an Oct. 12 seminar featuring Charlotte Moss. The kickoff event is

being calling “Inspirations In Design: Where Ideas Come From.”

Moss is a prominent designer in New York, who will appear in

Newport Beach at the invitation of the Decorative Arts Society board,

led by Newport designer Ann Dennis.

The series will continue with a Nov. 9 seminar, “Reflections of

Power: The History of the Mirror,” led by Martin Chapman of Los

Angeles. Continuing next year, four additional presentations will

take the local guests on a journey from the decorative arts

collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York to the world

renowned Winterthur Museum in Delaware.

Assisting Dennis this season are volunteers, including Newport’s

Sandra Ayres, Meredith Graves-Foreman, Cecilia Knott and Jamie

Shephardson, to name only a few. The Decorative Arts Society is a

nonprofit financial support wing, benefiting Girls Inc., Laura’s

House and New Directions for Women.

Tickets to the Decorative Arts lecture series begin at $160, with

Shelley and Tom Carl will join Rabbi Shelton Donnell as honorees

at the 2004 Anti-Defamation League Appeals Brunch, set for Oct. 31.

The league is headquartered in Costa Mesa, and the event will unfold

at The Palm Garden at the Four Seasons Hotel in Newport Beach,

bringing together community activists who work to make a difference

in fulfilling the Anti-Defamation League’s mission to promote justice

and fair treatment for all citizens.

The brunch is being chaired by Nancy and Jim Linden, with tickets

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Orange County recently held their

“Field of Dreams” fundraiser, raising $40,000.

More than 350 guests from Newport-Mesa and all over Orange County

converged upon The Grove of Anaheim to celebrate the positive work of

Boys and Girls Clubs in the community. Members of the Angels attended

the luncheon at the invitation of Angels’ owner Arte Moreno, adding

to the excitement of the day.

Jim Hill of KCBS-TV Channel 2 served as master of ceremonies for

the community gathering, also attended by current Angels Jeff DaVanon

and Josh Paul and former Anaheim players Dave Frost and Ken Forsch,

who now serves as assistant general manager for the Angels. Manager

Mike Scioscia, a Balboa Island resident, was also front and center

for the Boys and Girls Clubs.
