Lions Club says aloha to new members
JIM DE BOOM
The Newport Beach Hawaiian Lions Club held its second fundraiser
benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation earlier this
summer at Gary’s Island Home Store in Fashion Island. The event,
featuring live Hawaiian music and dancers, was enjoyed by more than
300 guests according to club President Sally Nockold.
Lions Club members wore traditional Hawaiian attire, as did most
of the guests, and were rewarded with leis flown in from the Islands.
Nockold said the event, which included dinner and a silent auction
with more than 100 items, raised almost $19,000 for Juvenile Diabetes
research. Sally Lawrence, the special event manager for JDRF’s Orange
County chapter, was on hand to receive the check from the Lions Club.
Recently, the Lions Club inducted new members Cheryl Mitchell,
Sandra Hill, Gigi Metcalf, Suzanne Rosas, Jean Unatin, Ani Dylan,
John Kasell and Linda Nelson.
“A love of Hawaii, it’s history and culture and a sincere desire
to help those less fortunate in the community is all you need to
qualify for membership,” Nockold said.

TV VIEWING TIP
Check out “7th Heaven” on Monday nights at 8 p.m. on KTLA. Make it
a family viewing time. There is a little corn, usually some laughs
and some good discussion opportunities for families. I hope you enjoy
“7th Heaven” as much as Barbara and I do!
