Here are some of the items the commission considered Thursday:

BALBOA THEATER

The commission postponed considering a request for a permit for

the Balboa Performing Arts Theater, which has been designated as a

landmark building, to increase its height up to a maximum of 55 feet.

The theater is on East Balboa Boulevard.

The City Council will consider a new lease agreement between the

city and the theater at its Sept. 14 meeting, so staff members

recommended postponing this item to the Sept. 23 Planning Commission

meeting, based on the outcome of the council’s action.

WHAT IT MEANS

The commission will consider the issue at its Sept. 23 meeting.

GENERAL PLAN UPDATE

The commission postponed reviewing possible changes to the city’s

general plan. The state requires cities to update their general plans

every so often.

The commission was scheduled to consider alternatives developed by

the General Plan Advisory Committee, which came up with options for

13 geographic areas, such as Banning Ranch and Corona del Mar.

The alternatives are being presented to the commission, and then

the City Council, to provide a chance for feedback and adjustment.

The alternatives are preliminary in nature, not full-fledged

recommendations.

After the two bodies review the alternatives, they will be

analyzed for the effects of traffic and fiscal and environmental

effects.

City staff members requested more time to gather some more

statistical data relating to the different alternatives, Commissioner

Ed Selich said.

WHAT IT MEANS

The commission will consider the issue at a later date.
