Host Anteater women second at Central Park
The UC Irvine women’s cross country team finished second and the
Anteater men’s squad placed fourth in the UCI/JL Design Enterprises
invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach Saturday.
UC San Diego won the 14-team women’s competition with 74 points.
UCI was second with 86 and Azusa Pacific third with 108. Brianna
Carstensen of Azusa Pacific was the individual champion with a time
of 18:16.0 over 5,000 meters.
UCI senior Kim Ramirez placed sixth in 19:03.5, freshman Marie
Nguyen was 11th in 19:20.3 and junior Kelli Vanderburg was 19th in
19:37.5. Freshmen Erinn Kim (19:42.1) and Candice Proctor (19:55.0)
were 21st and 29th, respectively. Sophomore Kim Handel finished 42nd
in 20:13.3 and senior Natalie St. Andre was 48th in 20:19.0 to
complete the Anteaters’ top seven.
The Cal Coast Track Club won the men’s title with 57 points, UC
San Diego was second with 68, Southern Utah finished third with 72
and UCI was fourth with 88 points in the 12-team field. Long Beach
State’s Jim Grabow won the individual title with a time of 25:21.2
over 8,000 meters, followed by UCI junior Ricky Barnes in 25:35.8.
Anteater junior Tom Whelan finished ninth in 26:00.5, senior David
Santos was 17th in 26:22.2 and sophomore Tim Hearst was 26th in
26:43.2. Freshman Adrian Doty was 34th (27:00.3), junior Silvestre
Uribe placed 38th (27:06.1) and sophomore Ryan Ketcham was 43rd
(27:10.8) to round out UCI’s top seven runners.
The Anteater teams will train in Mammoth next week before
returning to competition at the Stanford invitational Sept. 25.
